Lucie Blackburn esacped from slavery in Kentucky with her husband, Thornton, and settled in Toronto. He founded the city's first horse-drawn taxi company. They would both work tirelessly to to help other former slaves join them at the end of the Underground Railroad. They were living here in 1849, when the Great Fire burned down the heart of Toronto.
