William Petyon Hubbard was the first Black alderman in Canada. He got his start in politics after saving George Brown from drowning in the Don River and the two became friends. He would become City Hall's greatest champion of publicly-owned power, which led the creation of Toronto Hydro in the early 1900s. You can read more about William Peyton Hubbard on Torontoist here.
