William Lyon Mackenzie was the first mayor of Toronto, a passionate advocate for democracy and Canadian independence, and the publisher of some of our city's earliest newspapers. In 1837, he led a failed rebellion against the British government of the province and was forced to flee into exile for years before he was allowed to return.
