Samuel Jarvis was a member of the Family Compact, a small group of super-conservative, Protestant elites who controlled Toronto in the early 1800s. They opposd democracy, supported the British and tried to keep power in their own hands. In 1816, Jarvis killed a man in a duel over gambling debts.
