John Rolph was a Toronto doctor and a supporter of the struggle for democracy and independence in Canada. He was a supporter of William Lyon Mackenzie's rebellion in 1837 and would have become the first interim President of Canada if the revolution had succeeded. Instead, he was forced to flee into exile for years before being allowed to return. You can read more about John Rolph and his role in the Rebellion of 1837 on the Dreams Project blog here.
